Friday, January 29, 2016

Dear PWS Families,

Thank you to everyone that came out in support of the PTG Principals’ Winter Read last night. It was and is always a fun event. We hope to see you all at the Barnes and Noble Days tonight and tomorrow. Mrs. Daley and Mr. Mitchell will be reading tomorrow around 11:00. See you all then.
It has been nice enough weather to get the students outside this week. They certainly all needed the fresh air. It has been fun to see the snow games that they can create. Please remember to send your child to school with snow pants and boots if they want to play in the snow. We will continue to monitor “the snow pile” to ensure its safety.

Morning Drop Off
Just a reminder that we encourage students to ride the bus if possible.  Parent drop off in the morning is a busy place in the morning.  Many staff members park back there so it is important to pay extra careful attention in the parking lot so everyone stays safe.  As parents, we certainly understand having time schedules  unfortunately, the last couple of weeks parents have been honking their horns.  Please remember patience and that we are all role models for our children.  Thanks!

Box Tops for Education
We will be collecting all Box Tops and Labels for Education items on Friday, February 12.Please send them into school so that we can include them in spring counts.
A brief note on the Labels for Education program:
·         The 'Labels' are typically UPC symbols, although on some products, are actually the entire product cap. When sending in the UPC, please include the entire UPC Symbol – otherwise we cannot submit the clip.
·         Products with 'Labels' are: BIC, Campbell Soup & Chili, Pace (caps), Pepperidge Farm, Spaghetti'Os, Swanson broths, and V8 drinks (caps) - refer to https://www.labelsforeducation.com/Earn-Points/Participating-Products for more details.
Finally, be sure to visit www.BTFE.com and enter the many available raffles for free Box Tops!

Family Fun Night Help Needed
Donations Needed for Family Fun Night- If you have any unused or unwanted legos, we would love to have them or borrow them for family fun night! Just send them in with your child or send them to Mrs. West's room.
Thank you!

Dear PWS Families,

Hello and Happy Winter!  Today, Mr. Mitchell and I had the honor or working with 4th grade students on Genius Hours.  Students ask a question they are curious about, complete research and present their findings to the class.  Some of the questions the students had were, “Why is Tom Brady such a great Quarterback?”, “Why are there so many languages?”, and “How did language begin?”  Please read below about an exciting all school meeting we had on Thursday.

PWS Happenings
School Show-Rob Surette
On Thursday, our students had the opportunity to experience HeroArt. HeroArt is a performance by artist Rob Surette that mixes music, storytelling, history, and speed art. The students heard stories and watched as Rob created paintings of Christa McAuliffe, Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King Jr., and Yoda right before their eyes. It was an energetic, engaging, inspiring, and memorable show for all.

Penguin Day
January 20th is National Penguin Day.  Since Waddles, our PWS mascot is a penguin we thought it would be appropriate to celebrate such a holiday. We are asking that the students wear black and white or any other penguin themed attire.  We will be sharing some penguin fun facts and finding other ways to incorporate penguins throughout the day. It should be a Wonderful Waddling Wednesday!!!!

Father/Daughter Dance
The First Annual PWS Father Daughter Dance will be on Friday, February 5 from 6:00-8:00 in the PWS Multi-Purpose room.  Please remember to turn in your order form for tickets by January 29.

Weekly Lunch Message
Good Bosses need to Zoom In to the little things, but you also need to Zoom Out and pay attention to bigger things like classroom and school rules or how everyone is behaving in a certain space. To Zoom Out pretend you are using a camera with a wide lens, or look around at most the people in your space. Zoom Out by pretending to put a megaphone on your ear so you can hear important loudspeaker announcements, the pledge, and what the Cafeteria Monitors are saying.

Upcoming Dates
Monday, January 18th-Martin Luther King Day-No School

Wednesday, January 20th-National Penguin Day-Please wear black and white that day.

January 8, 2016

Dear PWS Families,

It has been a great start to  2016!  We did see some sleepy faces on Monday but by Tuesday students were right back to their energetic and fun-loving selves.  This week when visiting classrooms we saw students writing new year’s resolutions, playing math games and discussing stories that they had read.  The students were very happy when they were finally able to get outside this week.  Just a reminder that the students do go outside if it is 20 degrees or higher (we factor in the windchill). As you know, New England weather can be unpredictable but we suggest students come to school with their snow pants and boots everyday, just in case they go outside.  Thanks for your help with this.

PWS Happenings
Father/Daughter Dance
The First Annual PWS Father Daughter Dance will be on Friday, February 5 from 6:00-8:00 in the PWS Multi-Purpose room.  More information will be coming home in backpacks today!  Look for the pink sheet. (We will also be having a Mother/Son dance on Friday, April 15th-more information to come.)

Weekly Lunch Message
We have continued our weekly lunch messages to the students. These messages are given on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. We have dedicated the Thursday message to Executive Functioning. Below is an example of one of these messages to students.  Please feel free to review this with your children.

Super Students,
Good Bosses pay attention to little things and big things. A tool to help you do this is called “Zoom In-Zoom Out”. Let’s learn about Zoom In today. To Zoom In, pretend to use binoculars to zoom in and look at your teacher’s face and body when they give directions. Also, pretend that your ear is a microphone that will zoom in to hear all the parts of what they say. When you Zoom In, you are paying attention to the little details that are important for learning and doing.
