PWS Families,
On Tuesday evening we hosted 2nd grade families for our Annual Scarecrow Jubilee. It was an amazing turnout and a fun evening that raised over $700 for Families in Transition. Thank you to the second grade teachers, PTG Volunteers, and Bedford High School students who helped make this event successful.
Our PWS Wall of Heroes will be put up soon to commemorate Veterans Day. We encourage you to participate and help us honor all military, past and present. More information can be found in the link below.
Finally, we want to take a moment and celebrate our Fall Garden Club. This club wrapped up a few weeks ago. These students spent their Friday afternoons outside beautifying our property, learning about plants, cleaning our school yard, and learning invaluable lessons. It was a fun few weeks for all that were involved. Please enjoy a few photos of their great work.

News from PWS
PWS Halloween Parade
We are looking forward to our annual Halloween Parade coming up this Wednesday, October 31. Our morning kindergarteners will have a parade through the school hallways at 10:15. If your morning kindergartener attends afternoon K-Plus, they will also participate in the afternoon parade.
Our afternoon parade will begin at 1:30. Parents who come to watch the parade (all are welcome) should watch from outside. Cones will be set up so you know where to stand. The student parade will exit the school at the Kindergarten wing doors, proceed down the driveway by the gardens, continue onto the blacktop area, and finally re-enter the school through the front doors. We are looking forward to this event and all the fun and creative costumes we will see.

Witch Way Event Change
It looks like the Wicked Witch of the West is playing a cruel trick on us with the weather for the Lurgio Witch Way Fun Run on Saturday, October 27th. Instead of a tornado, we are getting a Nor'easter. In keeping with our theme of more FUN, we have decided to move our fundraiser indoors, which means we have been able to add more games and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
While we won’t be able to trick or trot down County Road, we will be taking our bibbed participants through the school to visit our Halloween-themed pit stops on a journey that culminates in the gymnasium and dining hall with the fun activities of our Witch Way Family Fun Fest. In addition to the costume contest and raffles prizes, we will also have Halloween-themed crafts, inflatable bounce houses, face painting, pumpkin decorating, and so much more!

Bedford Fire Department Coloring Contest
Once again, the Bedford Fire Department is conducting a contest they hope will get local families talking (and drawing) about fire safety in the home. From October 10-30th, children who go to school in Bedford are invited to enter the contest. One winner from each of the elementary schools and one local preschool will be selected to win the amazing prize of a RIDE TO SCHOOL IN A FIRE TRUCK. We work with the parents, schools and teachers to select a time that works best. The winner is picked up at home in a real fire truck and then brought to school. Usually, the winning child’s class is waiting outside and upon this very exciting arrival, we take some photos with the group.
All that it needed to enter is to complete the entry form (or a separate piece of paper) and include: Child’s name, Age, Grade, Home Address, Parent/Guardian name and email address and the school to which the child attends. (Vitally important to have all of that information accurate and legible) Then complete the following requirements for your drawing:
DRAW:
· An aerial view of the layout of your home
· A line showing two ways out
· The location of all smoke detectors
· The family meeting place. (This is the place where you and your family will meet if you have a fire in your home. It might be a mailbox, rock, tree, fence, street corner or a neighbor’s driveway. It should be in the front of the house so when the fire department arrives, we can be sure that everyone is out of the home safely.)
This is a fun way to motivate families to reinforce the importance of practicing escape routes from the home as well as review their family meeting place.
Some helpful hints:
· One past winner drew the landscape rock pattern that was around the base of the tree that was their designated meeting place. This was a clear indication that the family had actually walked out to the meeting place to review it for her drawing. This helps to reinforce the meeting place concept so it becomes instinctive in a child if there is an emergency.
· Another past winner drew all smoke detectors in the home and made a little note that one detector did not work when they tested it thus they replace it. Obviously, this family used this contest to build on their safe home habits of checking smoke alarms.
· Though we love to see entries that are clear collaborations of adults and children, it is important that the child is getting the benefit of learning or reinforcing this information. We have many entries that are great but they have the skill and detail of a product created solely by an adult. So remember…. Perfect drawings don’t often win. Child generated work with adult collaboration are usually the winning combination.
So good luck Bedford kids. Get your entry into the contest box located in the permit room at the Bedford Fire Department by 8pm on Monday, October 29th.
 Pats Peak Learn to Ski and Ride Program
Sign-up for this year's Learn to Ski or Ride (LTSR) program at Pats Peak ! This is a five-week Learn to Ski or Snowboard series for students in grades 1-8. The program runs Friday, January 4, 11, 18, 25 and February 1. There are 3:30 and 4:30 lessons available, or if you have an experienced student, they can opt to just do the lift ticket. Rentals are available for an additional cost. You must provide your own transportation, as this is not a school sponsored activity. An adult must be present during the lessons.

Crotched Mountain Ski Program
Join old friends and new ones at Crotched Mountain for some after-school skiing this winter! Sign up by November 15 and your student will hit the slopes on five Fridays after the New Year for just $129 – and they’ll also get a Peak Pass on February 19 which will get them out at seven more mountains for no additional cost for the rest of the season!
