PWS Families,

This week was full of fun, energy, and excitement. As the week wore on you could feel the energy of the students increase. It was great to see so many parents and families come in and celebrate with us, either as part of a classroom party or the fourth grade multicultural buffets. This morning's all school meeting was a great opportunity to celebrate the season and the acts of kindness over the past couple of weeks.

December 14, 2018

PWS Families,
The excitement of the weeks before vacation is always very high at an elementary school. One of the things we cherish is the sound of children singing holiday songs throughout the school. It has been great to see that excitement turn into some true and authentic learning opportunities with the students. Whether it is first graders working on Breakout sessions to rescue Rudolph or second graders diligently researching animal habitats, the students are engaged and working well.
We received a thank you note this week from the Bedford High School students who coordinated the Halloween donation drive for UNICEF. Thanks to your generosity we were able to contribute $664.75.
Speaking of donations, our Lost and Found area is teeming with items. All items remaining after December 21st will be donated to those in need. Please take a moment next week to check out this area and claim anything that may belong to your child.
Finally, we want to thank and give well wishes to our Student Teachers who have worked so hard with our students this semester. Thank you to Ashley Brand in Mrs. O'Rourke's class, Mary Theresa Whalen in Mrs. Beecher's class, and Daniel Espinoza in Mrs. Piantedosi's Art class. We know you are all on to great careers as educators.

Have a Great Weekend,

The response to our annual Food Drive has been extraordinary!  In just one week, we filled over five large containers of food and collected 3,283 items. This level of giving shows how amazing PWS families and students are. Thank you for your generosity and support.

PWS Families,
Today our fourth graders participated in the annual culmination to a unit on immigration. Coming to America: Ellis Island Day allows students to simulate what they've learned, over many weeks, about their ancestors and their native countries.Thank you to Mrs. Speaker, our fourth grade teachers, and the many staff who volunteered to make this moving program possible. Here is a video to commemorate the day. Ellis Island Day

Our annual Food Drive kicked off today with donations from many students and staff of any canned good or food item. We've already collected over 100 items! This drive will last through next week. Please see the link below for more information and specifics about each day. Thank you for your generosity and support.

As weather becomes a factor, we want to take a moment and remind you about our drop off procedures in the morning. If you are dropping your child off before 7:50, please go to the back parking lot, where staff will be available from 7:30 - 7:50 to receive the children. If it is after 7:50, please come to the front parking lot, park in a spot, and walk your child into the building. We are noticing more children being dropped off and not being accompanied into the building. We appreciate your help in making sure everyone remains safe.

Have a Great Weekend,

Former Student Visit and Presentation
Emma Benson found her love for performing at Peter Woodbury school in 2006 when she joined the school chorus, and hasn’t stopped since then. Participating in community theatre and all the musicals at Bedford High School, she graduated from the Bedford school district in 2014, ready to take on a theatre degree. Four years later she had completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre at Shenandoah University. Thanks to a nurturing and enriching college education, in her year post graduation Emma has been cast in the national tour of the Broadway musical, ‘Something Rotten!’, which is touring the U.S. and South Korea until June of 2019. On December 6th, she’ll be offering a presentation to 3rd and 4th grade PWS students during recess about what it’s like to be a performer. Emma will be showing behind the scenes footage from Something Rotten, talking about the making of a Broadway musical, getting an arts education, and answering questions from the students. She’s so excited to visit PWS where it all began!

Bedford Food Pantry
Peter Woodbury has November as a collection month in support of the Bedford Community Food Pantry. We will be collecting single serving juices (Example). Please refrain from sending in glass containers. The donation bin will be in the lobby of the school. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

PWS Families,
Thank you for all you did to ensure that staff and students were able to arrive safely this morning. Sometimes our short weeks become even shorter due to Mother Nature. Adding snow into the mix increases the excitement level in the building.

At the beginning of this week, we held a moving assembly to honor Veterans Day. Thank you to Mrs. Frazier and the many other staff who helped put this ceremony together. Students were able to sing patriotic songs, learn about Veterans Day, and thank some local Veterans who were able to join us.

It has been very nice to see all the parents come through the school as parent teacher conferences wrap up. We can't thank you enough for the level of support and cooperation we feel from all of you in ensuring every student's success.

This will be our last blog before next week's break so we want to take this opportunity to wish you and your families and happy and peaceful Thanksgiving. We are thankful each and every day for all you do to make Peter Woodbury such a wonderful place.

PWS Families,

We hope you have had an opportunity to visit our Wall of Heroes. This annual display honors the service of the military personnel, connected to PWS, dating back over 100 years. It will be up for a few weeks, so please come by and visit. We are looking forward to honoring all of our veterans this coming Tuesday at our All School Meeting (more information below). All PWS Girl, Boy, and Cub Scouts are encouraged to wear their uniforms.

Each year we ask our fourth graders to create the covers for our yearbook. We are excited to announce that the winners of this year's design are Maeve Kelly, John Mortimer, and Harun Halilovic. Congratulations to our winners and every student who submitted an entry. We can't wait to see the final product.

First quarter report cards are now available on our parent portal. A reminder that report cards are not sent home, but rather are available to you online. Please follow the link for information on how to access these report cards.

Finally, we want to take this opportunity to extend our deepest thanks and appreciation to all Veterans. We are indebted to your service.
