PWS PrinciPal’s News
We are a community that inspires and develops, engaged, successful learners every chance, every day.
 September 28, 2018

PWS Families,
Last week we shared with you the topics that were covered during the principals' portion of Open House. Many of you asked for a bit more detail about the topics, so here is a short description of each section:

  • Morning Meeting and Responsive Classroom- During this portion we demonstrated the components of Morning Meeting, which takes place in every classroom. Greeting, Activity, Share, and Morning Message were the components demonstrated.
  • The District Attendance policy- The District Attendance Policy was clarified to explain that up to 10 absences are excused for any reason. After 10 the only absences that are “excused” are for medical reasons or bereavement. Medical reasons need to be documented by a medical professional. Once a student reaches 15 absences parents will be notified and a meeting may be called. The reasoning behind this policy in based on how attendance issues can sometimes grow into larger issues as a student progresses through the school district.
  • Homework Expectations- It was clarified that Peter Woodbury School is NOT a no homework school. However, homework comes in many forms. Teachers may assign actual pages to work on, worksheets, or homework may look as simple as working on math facts and quietly reading. The teachers use their discretion when assigning homework but they follow the district guidelines of 10 minutes per grade level.
  • Administration Communication with Parents- The administration sends out a weekly blog at 5:00 pm on Friday. This is where the bulk of communication will come from. In rare instances, we may utilize the Power School Messenger, but we try to limit this as to not overburden your inbox and therefore take away the importance of our notifications.
  • Building Independence in Students- Parents were shown this video and then we had a discussion about building independence with the students. We do what we can here at school but also respect the rights of parents. A simple example that was used was when a child forgets their homework. As a parent, you may choose to let them learn the consequences of this, or you may choose to bring it in to school for them. As a school, we will ask that you leave it at the office as opposed to bringing it down to them. Therefore they learn the responsibility of at least having to come to the office to get it. In the end, we do not want to create students who are “stuck on an escalator.”
If you attended this session and haven't had a chance yet, we ask that you take a moment to fill out this Feedback Form, so we may plan for the future.
Thank you to our amazing PTG Volunteers for coordinating today's Room Parent Luncheon. The conversations were informative and the food was delicious.
Tuesday is picture day. We look forward to seeing all the smiling faces on Tuesday.
Have a Great Fall Weekend,
Cheryl Daley (Principal)
Dan Mitchell (Assistant Principal)

 September 21, 2018

PWS Families,

Last night's Open House was an amazing success. It was great to see you all come back to school to discover your child's classroom and support our Book Fair. The energy of the evening was still in the building this morning. The number of parents who attended our information session last night well exceeded our expectations. Thank you to those who came and made the presentation such a success. If you attended please take a moment to fill out THIS SURVEY and give us some feedback. If you were unable to attend our presentation, we discussed the following topics:
  • What a Morning Meeting and Responsive Classroom look like
  • The District Attendance policy
  • Homework Expectations
  • Administration Communication with Parents
  • Building Independence in Students

As we walked around the school this week, it was evident that the students were focused and that classes are in full academic swing. It has been so impressive to see the level of respect from the students. We have seen first graders walking quietly in the halls, second graders using the Buddy Bench at recess, third graders working collaboratively in groups, and fourth graders helping out the younger students and being excellent role models. All of these examples make us hopeful and excited for an excellent school year.

Finally, thank you all for support of this year's Book Fair. At last count we sold  over $7000 worth of books.  These profits will go right back in to making PWS an amazing school to learn, work, and come to everyday. Thank you to Keri Sullivan and the PTG Volunteers for making this a success.

PWS Families,
Open House is this coming Thursday, September 20th and we wanted to update you on some changes.  This year K-2 Open House will run from 5:30-6:15 and 3-4 from 6:45-7:30.  The half hour in between (6:15-6:45) will be a time that Mr. Mitchell and I will meet with parents in the multi purpose room.  During this time we will discuss Morning Meeting (Responsive Classroom), student independence, communication, homework and school rules. School aged students will stay in their classrooms with the teacher. We ask that any non school age children please stay with their parents.
It is our hope that this time together will provide you some greater insight into our school and maintain the open lines of communication we all value so much.
Many of our classrooms are still looking for volunteers to help with various activities such as Room Parent, Math Superstars, It's a GAS, and Box Tops collection.  If you are interested and have not filled out the online Volunteer Form, you may find it HERE.  We request that you also fill out the form in order to be notified of other volunteer opportunities at PWS throughout the year.  Thank you for your help!

Fourth Grade Chorus Information
Dear 4th grade students and parents/guardians,
It will soon be time to start our 4th grade chorus here at Peter Woodbury School! This is a great opportunity for students to learn how to use their singing voices as part of a musical group and sing a variety of songs and styles. We will have several performances throughout the school year both during the school day and in the evening. Our first concert is scheduled for January 9, 2019 at 7:00 pm.
Chorus will be held on every Tuesday from 2:20 pm until 3:00 pm. Students will be called down from their classrooms at the end of the day and bring all of their belongings to the music room. Dismissal to parents/guardians will be at 3:00 pm. Please wait for your child in the lobby. If your child will be picked up at a later time you will need to make other arrangements.
Information about the after school program is available by calling New Morning School at 669-3591. I am not able to stay after chorus due to my own childcare limitations.
In order for any chorus to perform well, all members must attend as many rehearsals as possible. After 3 unexcused absences per term (Fall/Spring) your child may be asked to no longer participate in chorus.  It is also important that all children come ready to learn and have fun with appropriate behavior at every rehearsal.

If you are interested in participating in chorus please complete the attached chorus contract by Wednesday, September 19th. Chorus will begin on Tuesday, September 25th.

I am very excited to work with your child to help them develop their musical talents. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. More information and chorus updates can be found on my blog. You can find it on the Peter Woodbury webpage, then click the tab Academics > PWS Staff > Specialists.

For parents picking up from the New Morning after school program, we ask that you enter through the gym doors, if the children are not there, please proceed outside where they most likely are. PWS PrinciPal’s News
We are a community that inspires and develops, engaged, successful learners every chance, every day.
September 7, 2018

PWS Families,
It's hard to believe we have already completed our second week of school. We can't say that the temperature has been the most comfortable, but everyone has been doing a great job in dealing with it and making the best of a very hot situation. We like to spend the beginning of the year getting into all the classes to read a story and have a talk with the students. We have been into most of the classes and will be in every class by early next week. This week we have been reading either the book Woolbur or Tacky the Penguin.  These books are a great example of our message, which is that we all learn in different ways and that difference are what make us and learning so great. The students have really enjoyed the stories and we have certainly enjoyed our time with them.
This morning we had over 45 parents join us for our PTG Volunteer Welcome Back Breakfast. It was nice to have that burst of energy and excitement about volunteering in our school on a Friday Morning. The PTG donates over $80,000 to the schools each year, please consider joining and getting involved. Please make sure to pay attention to our "News from the PTG" section of these notes for up to date information about events and volunteer possibilities. We could not do what we do without all of you!
Have a Great Weekend,
Cheryl Daley (Principal)
Dan Mitchell (Assistant Principal)

News from PWS

News from our Garden

Students had the opportunity to sample tomatillos and cucumbers in the dining room today. These vegetables have been grown in our own PWS organic garden and were picked this morning! Thank you to Mrs. Gibbons and her kitchen staff for always preparing healthy foods for our students and to the Garden Club for helping our garden grow!

Garden Club
In addition to our occasional and spontaneous garden lessons during morning and lunch time recess, we are pleased to offer Garden Club to 2nd-4th grade students after school on Fridays for four weeks beginning Sept 21. Registration is first come, first served and limited to 25. Click HERE to register your child.
This is our tenth year anniversary of the PWS Community School Yard! We will be working hard to prepare for new garden beds and plantings around the school property.
School Yard Spruce Up
Our Daly Garden and school yard are in need of an update.  The beds will be reconfigured in the spring in honor of our anniversary, the cottage needs to be painted, loam needs to be moved, shrubs planted, and other projects. If you have a tractor or BobCat that could assist in the heavy lifting and movement of loam it would be appreciated. Please plan to join us Sunday, October 14 for a day of community!
The school yard was created through private funding and grants, and the wonderful collaboration of teachers, parents, and community members.  It is the only School Yard of its kind in New England. We look forward to your help in sustaining it. Watch for more information regarding times.
Please contact Mrs. Beltramo (beltramom@sau25.net) if can help with equipment or if you have any questions.
Parent Pick Up Slips
If you, or someone you know, will be picking up your child at Parent Pick Up on a regular basis and would like a permanent Pick Up Slip, please fill out the link below. We are asking that you complete the form by Friday, September 7. We will get these slips to you as soon as possible.
Hannaford Helps Program
Once again you have the opportunity to help our school by simply buying your groceries. The Hannaford Helps program will donate a portion of sales back to our school. All you have to do is shop at either of the Bedford Hannaford locations, and insert your Hannaford Helps Slip into the tower. A flyer is available at school with more information on how you can participate along with a list of eligible products or you can visit http://www.hannaford.com/helpsschools.
Info Snap Completion
Parents should have received an email in early August asking for you to complete the Info Snap Information process. Another email was sent recently to those parents who had not yet completed this process. If you did not receive this email or are having an issue with the process, please let the main office know.

Getting to and From School
AM Drop-Off
When transporting your child to Peter Woodbury School between 7:30 AM and 7:50 AM, you are asked to drop-off in the back parking lot of the school.  A duty teacher is available to supervise children at the drop off area beginning at 7:30 AM. The academic day begins at 8:00 AM. Parents, if you arrive after 7:50 AM you must, park in the front lot, accompany your child to the office, and sign a clipboard noting his/her tardiness.
Parking
Visitor/ Parent parking is available in the front parking lot. The spaces facing the building and Back River Rd. are designated for parent parking. There are an additional four spaces by the side of the building that are designated for short term visitor parking. We ask that these spots be used for mid day pick-up, drop-off, or any business generally lasting under fifteen minutes. It is important that all signs pertaining to traffic flow be observed and followed in order to maintain a safe space for both car and pedestrian traffic.
Riding the Bus
Information concerning bus transportation and procedures is available in the District’s Transportation Handbook on the District’s Website at www.sau25.net>Departments> Transportation.  The handbook includes information on bus routes and stops, no school procedures, rules for safe transportation, and student conduct/discipline procedures. It is vital that parents, students, bus drivers, and District staff work together to maintain the safety of our buses. Please review the bus rules with your child. Safety is our first priority.  For any further questions or concerns, please contact the transportation coordinator at 472-3755 X 1234.

Lunch Tray Update
For the 2018-2019 school year, the Bedford Food Service Department planned to purchase compostable lunch trays per the approved petition warrant article. In performing comprehensive research into companies that provide these trays, the Food Service Department, in collaboration with the NHDES, located a new and upcoming company, Grow Plastics, to provide the new lunch trays. After much development in creating a partnership with Grow Plastics and our current paper supplier Central Paper, it has been determined that the new compostable lunch trays will not be available at the start of the 2018-19 school year. However, Grow Plastics has informed the Food Service Department that the lunch trays will be available sometime this fall, and at the very latest January 2019. The Food Service Department continues to work diligently with Grow Plastics and Central Paper on our new and exciting partnership.
