PWS PrinciPal’s News
PWS Families,

Well we survived another Snow Day. I don’t know about you, but I am excited about turning the clocks ahead this weekend and appreciating any sign of spring. Despite the shortened week, we still had two exciting events here at PWS. On Wednesday, we had the Hip Hoppin’ Hawks of Londonderry South School visit us to help kick off our annual Jump Rope for Heart Campaign. More information can be found below. Thank you to Mrs.  Ferenc for once again coordinating this campaign. Here are some pictures from the whole school meeting:

Secondly, the third and fourth graders had the opportunity to experience the TIGER show this morning. The TIGER program tours the state and performs for students delivering messages on Bullying, Respect, and Friendship. The students were  entertained by this fast paced, funny, but also very informative and important performance. Here are some pictures of our own Mrs. Ferenc and Mrs. Correia getting in on the act:

Finally, as we continue to support the Bedford Food Pantry, our donation bin will be back for the month March. This month we are asking for donations of individual Macaroni and Cheese cups (Easy Mac). The donation bin will be in our lobby all month. We thank you in advance for your generosity and support of this program.

Have a great weekend,
Dan Mitchell (Assistant Principal)

News from PWS
IT TAKES HEART TO BE A HERO!
The Jump Rope for Heart event kicked off this week in Physical Education class with a video about a Heart Hero, Camden, who is 8 years old and was born with a heart condition. Thanks to the kids who have raised donations for the American Heart Association in the past, Camden was able to have surgery to help her heart.

This week in Physical Education class students have discussed heart disease to help students understand why they are raising money for the American Heart Association.  We also hosted the Hip Hoppin’ Hawks jump rope team who performed for us after discussing why we choose heart healthy habits to live healthy lives.

Collection envelopes are going home this week March 5th-9th and must be returned by Friday, March 30th.

Online fundraising is much easier and more efficient since students don't have to remember to hand in money.  Mrs. Ferenc has encouraged the students to register online and sign up to choose a healthy heart challenge and earn a free glow scare squad wristband.  Make a web page by visiting www.heart.org/jump and search for Peter Woodbury Elementary School using city and state.  Join our school's team and set up your own web page. You can then email the link to family and friends.

Have your child return their coupon to Mrs. Ferenc next week so she knows that your child has raised at least $5 in donations for Jump Rope For Heart or get your first donation online to earn your first monster.  For more information, please contact Mrs. Ferenc at ferencj@sau25.net.

From the Yearbook Team:

Improving our Attendance Practice
The district has tightened up our attendance practices this year. This is because many absences can make it challenging for a student to be successful in school. There has been an unintended (but very real) consequence to this change. Some families have shared with us that our approach has felt insensitive. I want to make it clear that there are times when students need to be out of school -- it could be for medical reasons, a family loss, or (especially this year) the flu. At the same time, we still need to be proactive with families about the impact of absences. So, if a student is absent for 10 days in one year, the school will continue to contact the parent/guardian to make sure we understand the challenges the family is facing. If a student reaches 15 days absent, the school will arrange a meeting to develop a plan (if one is not already in place) to help the student and family manage those underlying challenges. While our new practice will remain in place, we will work hard to communicate more clearly AND sensitively. - Sincerely, Chip McGee

Discussing Substance Abuse in our Community
These are two truly excellent community discussions on substance abuse. They were hosted by BeBold at their regular speaker series. If you could not attend, you might be interested in watching the videos. All of these discussions (and a lot more) is available on the BCTV website.

“Understanding How to Parent So that Children Can Succeed:  Addressing Childhood Anxiety and its Potential Pathway towards Substance Abuse”
Special guest speaker Jessica Lahey veteran teacher, journalist, and author of The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed.
Jessica Lahey will provide insight on how to raise kids who are happy and healthy and less likely to turn to destructive coping strategies, including ways to prevent childhood addiction. Lahey will also share research on the most effective ways to parent and support the psycho-social and emotional needs of our children.  Additionally, she will outline risk factors, explain which positive interventions can overcome those risk factors, and offer parents and teachers actionable, useful tools for raising happy, resilient children who will be less likely to turn to unhealthy behaviors when faced with the increasingly toxic stress and anxiety they face at home, in school and in our society. This event is open to all parents/guardians.
The 45-minute presentation will be followed by a 30-minute question and answer session.

Bedford Early Education Program  (BEEP) is accepting registrations for the 2018-2019 School Year.  We have space available in many of our 3 and 4 year old classrooms.  Please contact Roberta Keane, BEEP Coordinator at (603) 627-1776 x23216 or keaner@sau25.net.

BEEP  is a regular early childhood program  providing the opportunity for typically developing three and four year old children and children identified as having special needs to learn and play together.  We believe active participation and concrete learning experiences make learning more meaningful for the children and best serve their development and learning. All the children are provided a multi-sensory learning environment in which they utilize all senses in learning new concepts.  Language development and social skills are emphasized throughout the integrated curriculum. Implementation of specialized intervention within natural situations occurs without disrupting the curriculum and educational routines of the classroom.

Staff:
Classrooms are staffed by certified educators with a background in early childhood and special education.  In addition, our staff includes a licensed speech and language pathologist, a speech assistant, licensed occupational therapist, occupational therapy assistant, licensed physical therapist, classroom assistants and a program coordinator.  Educational consultants are available as needed. Throughout a BEEP day, each classroom has a teacher and assistant at all times, and other therapists and paraprofessionals may join the classroom periodically.
Programs:
·Classroom programs for 3 and 4 year olds are provided two, three, four, or five days a week for 2 ½ hours a day.
·The Intensive Needs program offers the opportunity for an individualized self-contained, or partially self-contained program..
