September 14, 2018

PWS Families,
Open House is this coming Thursday, September 20th and we wanted to update you on some changes.  This year K-2 Open House will run from 5:30-6:15 and 3-4 from 6:45-7:30.  The half hour in between (6:15-6:45) will be a time that Mr. Mitchell and I will meet with parents in the multi purpose room.  During this time we will discuss Morning Meeting (Responsive Classroom), student independence, communication, homework and school rules. School aged students will stay in their classrooms with the teacher. We ask that any non school age children please stay with their parents.
It is our hope that this time together will provide you some greater insight into our school and maintain the open lines of communication we all value so much.
Many of our classrooms are still looking for volunteers to help with various activities such as Room Parent, Math Superstars, It's a GAS, and Box Tops collection.  If you are interested and have not filled out the online Volunteer Form, you may find it HERE.  We request that you also fill out the form in order to be notified of other volunteer opportunities at PWS throughout the year.  Thank you for your help!
Have a Great Weekend,
Cheryl Daley (Principal)
Dan Mitchell (Assistant Principal)

National Respect Day
This month our social-emotional learning themes are Respect and Zones of Regulation.  Tuesday, September 18th is National Respect Day.  We are encouraging students to wear gold or yellow to represent the Golden Rule for Respect - "Treat others the way you want to be treated".  Students will be challenged to be extra respectful of others on this day by doing random acts of kindness.
Fourth Grade Chorus Information
Dear 4th grade students and parents/guardians,
It will soon be time to start our 4th grade chorus here at Peter Woodbury School! This is a great opportunity for students to learn how to use their singing voices as part of a musical group and sing a variety of songs and styles. We will have several performances throughout the school year both during the school day and in the evening. Our first concert is scheduled for January 9, 2019 at 7:00 pm.
Chorus will be held on every Tuesday from 2:20 pm until 3:00 pm. Students will be called down from their classrooms at the end of the day and bring all of their belongings to the music room. Dismissal to parents/guardians will be at 3:00 pm. Please wait for your child in the lobby. If your child will be picked up at a later time you will need to make other arrangements.
Information about the after school program is available by calling New Morning School at 669-3591. I am not able to stay after chorus due to my own childcare limitations.
In order for any chorus to perform well, all members must attend as many rehearsals as possible. After 3 unexcused absences per term (Fall/Spring) your child may be asked to no longer participate in chorus.  It is also important that all children come ready to learn and have fun with appropriate behavior at every rehearsal.

If you are interested in participating in chorus please complete the attached chorus contract by Wednesday, September 19th. Chorus will begin on Tuesday, September 25th.

I am very excited to work with your child to help them develop their musical talents. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. More information and chorus updates can be found on my blog. You can find it on the Peter Woodbury webpage, then click the tab Academics > PWS Staff > Specialists.

This is our tenth year anniversary of the PWS Community School Yard! We will be working hard to prepare for new garden beds and plantings around the school property.

School Yard Spruce Up

Our Daly Garden and school yard are in need of an update.  The beds will be reconfigured in the spring in honor of our anniversary, the cottage needs to be painted, loam needs to be moved, shrubs planted, and other projects. If you have a tractor or BobCat that could assist in the heavy lifting and movement of loam it would be appreciated. Please plan to join us Sunday, October 14 for a day of community!

The school yard was created through private funding and grants, and the wonderful collaboration of teachers, parents, and community members.  It is the only School Yard of its kind in New England. We look forward to your help in sustaining it. Watch for more information regarding times.
Please contact Mrs. Beltramo (beltramom@sau25.net) if can help with equipment or if you have any questions.

BHS Book Drive

Sydney and Megan Leyden, BHS students, will be running a book drive to benefit the Manchester, NH Reach Out and Read Program from September 17th-28th. Gently used children's books would be greatly appreciated. The donation box will be set up near the front office.

Getting to and From School
AM Drop-Off
When transporting your child to Peter Woodbury School between 7:30 AM and 7:50 AM, you are asked to drop-off in the back parking lot of the school.  A duty teacher is available to supervise children at the drop off area beginning at 7:30 AM. The academic day begins at 8:00 AM. Parents, if you arrive after 7:50 AM you must, park in the front lot, accompany your child to the office, and sign a clipboard noting his/her tardiness.
Parking
Visitor/ Parent parking is available in the front parking lot. The spaces facing the building and Back River Rd. are designated for parent parking. There are an additional four spaces by the side of the building that are designated for short term visitor parking. We ask that these spots be used for mid day pick-up, drop-off, or any business generally lasting under fifteen minutes. It is important that all signs pertaining to traffic flow be observed and followed in order to maintain a safe space for both car and pedestrian traffic.
Riding the Bus
Information concerning bus transportation and procedures is available in the District’s Transportation Handbook on the District’s Website at www.sau25.net>Departments> Transportation.  The handbook includes information on bus routes and stops, no school procedures, rules for safe transportation, and student conduct/discipline procedures. It is vital that parents, students, bus drivers, and District staff work together to maintain the safety of our buses. Please review the bus rules with your child. Safety is our first priority.  For any further questions or concerns, please contact the transportation coordinator at 472-3755 X 1234.
Parent Pick Up
If you are picking up your child at the end of the school day, we ask that you enter through the gym doors. There are yellow signs that state "Parent Pick Up". Once inside we ask that you fill out a pick up slip, for parents who will be picking up regularly, you can have a permanent pass created (see above). For parents picking up from the New Morning after school program, we ask that you enter through the gym doors, if the children are not there, please proceed outside where they most likely are. New Morning Schools runs this program, so the school office will not be able to dismiss your child at this point.

Sand Toys Needed
This summer our parking lot got redone, our school yard is looking beautiful, and our sandbox is filled with new sand. The only thing that is missing is some sand toys. While there are some, we are always looking for more. So if you have some sand toys at home that aren't getting the love they used to, please consider sending them to us. They are sure to get the love and attention that they deserve.
