Peter Woodbury School- A Place Where People Care!

August 20th, 2020

Dear PWS Families,

A very happy last Friday of summer vacation to you all! We are brimming with excitement to get back to business next Thursday August 27th as the 2020-21 school year will kick off! Please take some time to carefully read this blog as well as watch this video. There will be many changes in and around the Peter Woodbury School so we want to make sure everyone is on the same page to ensure a successful start!

Also, a big reminder that for hybrid learners the first day of school for the alphabet grouping L-Z is Thursday August 27th and the first day of school for the alphabet grouping A-K is Friday August 28th! Remote Learners will have material and ChromeBook pickup on Tuesday August 25th from 3-5pm!

Drop Off

The drop off procedure will remain largely the same as we resume school next week. Drop off will take place by the kindergarten wing. Parents please drive slowly as you approach the school. Your child will be greeted by a PWS staff member and escorted to their classroom. There will be no morning recess to begin this school year. Students should come to school on their first day with the name tag that was sent home this week. The name tag should include your student's first, last and teacher name printed on the front.

This is also a reminder that students will not be entering the building until 7:45am at the earliest. This must be maintained to make sure all staff members are ready to receive your students into the building.

Masks

Masks are required when students get out of their vehicles and make their way to their classroom. Students will be coached by their teachers to help them understand our mask protocols that are outlined in the Bedford School District Reopening Plan. We request that you send your child to school with two masks a day (just in case they need a new one). Forgotten mask? No problem, we will have child-sized masks available as students enter the building.

Cafeteria/Food Services

The cafeteria will be arranged so that students will be able to eat six feet apart from one another. It is extremely important that parents who wish to order hot lunch make their selection on PowerSchool prior to the start of the school day. The PWS cafeteria staff will be delivering lunch to the students to avoid lines and possible congestion! Our cafeteria will still have allergy tables to accommodate students as needed.

Recess

The school yard at PWS is going to be sectioned off into five areas to respect plenty of space for classrooms to stay together. Students will rotate through a schedule to make sure they get to spend time in each area. It will be important that students remain with their class at all times at recess. We understand that this might be a hard thing to ask but it will help keep all of our students and staff healthy.

Our Physical Education teacher, Mrs. Ferenc will be working with our students to learn some engaging activities to play at recess. Please do not send in additional pieces of recess equipment (footballs, balls, jump-ropes, etc.).

Hallway Signage

When students return to PWS next week they will notice some different signage around the building. Like other facilities in the town of Bedford, students will see recognizable one way signage to promote socially distanced hallways to travel in. Please show our video to your student(s) so they have a heads up as to what to look for when they return!

Student Pickup

Please be aware that student pickup is going to be a little different this year at PWS. First and foremost, please do not arrive at the building prior to 1:50pm for student pickup. Children will be out at recess and vehicle traffic will not be tolerated prior to 1:50pm. Please watch the video (linked above) and look at this detailed map to understand the traffic pattern. A sign with your student's name(s) and grade level should be visible on your car's dashboard to move the process along. The dismissal process will begin at 2:10pm for the first few weeks of school. Bus loading will take place behind the building and parent traffic will have to be interrupted at times for bus departure.Thank you for your assistance in making student pickup a quick and safe process!

Medication Drop-off

Medication drop off to the nurse will be handled differently this year since Meet and Greet will be virtual.
If your child requires daily prescription medication, please contact the nurse directly to arrange an appointment for drop off.
The nurse will be accepting PRN medications (epi pen, Benadryl, inhalers, lactaid, etc) on Monday, 8/24 and Tuesday, 8/25 from 10am-1pm.  A table will be set up outside at the front of the school where the nurse will accept medication under the following circumstances only:
  • Medication is properly labeled with valid expiration dates
  • MD orders are provided for this school year
  • Completed and signed (by MD) Allergy Action Plans and valid MD orders must accompany all Epi pens or they will not be accepted
  • OTC forms are available online or can be signed at the time of drop off

We hope everyone has a restful and relaxing last few days of summer vacation! We can't wait to welcome back our students both in-person our virtually!

Mrs. Cheryl Daley and Mr. Marc Robitaille
