January 6, 2017

Dear PWS Families,

Welcome Back and Happy New Year to all of you! It was great to welcome all the students back this past Tuesday.  They were rested, relaxed, and excited to be back at school and share their vacation stories.

We had the pleasure of spending some time in K Plus this week.  They always have a lot to share including singing the latest pop songs, telling us who their new "besties" are, and telling us how excited they are to go outside to play.

We have many exciting events coming up to get us through these sometimes cold winter months. In the next few weeks we will be sending home more information about our Family Fun Night, Principals Winter Read, Barnes and Noble Book Fair, and a few other school and PTG events. Be sure to check the blog and look for the details on these fun events. We look forward to having you all take part with us.

Mental Health: A little knowledge can go a long way
Former NH Supreme Court Justice John Broderick, will be speaking to our Bedford community on the evening of January 19th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. at the Lurgio Middle School Library.  We invite you and all those in our community to attend, to listen to his message, and to join in this effort to recognize that mental illness is a disease. Just like any other disease, it cannot be treated with silence and stigma, but instead with communication and active treatment.

Family Fun Night
Dear Families,
We hope you have marked your calendars for our Family Fun Night (FFN) which will be held February 15, 2017! Planning for our fun filled night is "STEAM-ing" along.  Our student-designed t-shirts have become a tradition!  The students love having an investment in the night and seeing their work worn by their peers and PWS families.  To help offset the cost of the t-shirts this year, we welcome the financial support from businesses/corporation affiliated with PWS families.  In turn, we would love to advertise your company's name on the back of the student designed shirts. Please click HERE to learn more.  Stayed tuned for more FFN info!!!

From the Art Room
Classes have been busy and excited. First graders recently completed paper weavings and are now working on a collaged pair of matching (or not) socks. Second and third grade have finished one of their two pieces that will be in our spring art show. Fourth grade is in the middle of a weaving project. Art Club members are working on STEAM based centerpieces, using their art and engineering brain, for Family Fun Night.  A new exhibit from PWS has gone up in the district office. Click to see the PWS artists whose work is displayed this quarter.  Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who have helped these past few weeks!

Math and Science Volunteers
Are you looking for ways to volunteer in the classrooms?  Please consider signing up to help us with math and science activities.  CLICK HERE for more information.

Ecosmith Recycle Bins for Destination Imagination
Did you know that every school in the district has an Ecosmith Recycle Bin?  This is a great way to donate/recycle old clothes, while helping raise funds for our teams who advance to Global Finals each year.  You can put any kind of fabrics in these bins, towels and stuffed animals too.  Ripped shirts and pants with holes are fine, as well as well worn shoes.  Bedford DI greatly appreciates your continued participation in this program.

Engineer Volunteers

We are looking for a few engineer volunteers to help a PWS student get a prosthetic hand. We are teaming with students at the Academy of Science and Design in Nashua who will meet every Monday from 3:30-4:30. They are establishing a chapter of the E-Nable Organization and will be utilizing 3D printing to make prosthetics. Their hope is to make a prosthetic for any child in NH who may be in need of one. Please contact Mr. Mitchell (mitchelld@sau25.net) if you are interested or have any questions.
