PWS PrinciPal’s News
PWS Families,
The week before a vacation is usually an interesting and eventful one and this week was
certainly both. The energy that filled the school was exciting and infectious. It was certainly
nice to be able to provide some great opportunities for the children to release this energy.
Yesterday, Mrs. Ferenc concluded this year’s Jump Rope for Heart Drive. We raised over
$16,000 for the American Heart Association. Thank you for your continued and outstanding
support of this program. Also, thank you to Mrs. Ferenc, the fourth grade jumpers,
Mrs. Stallone’s class, and the faculty jump rope team for making the event fun and
memorable.

Last Night was our Annual Peter Woodbury Art Show. The turnout for this show was the
best that any of us could remember. Watching the students share their work with their
families was incredible. Thank you to Mrs. Piantedosi and her crew of parent volunteers,
students, and high school volunteers for putting this amazing night together. Some of the
artwork will stay hanging in our hallways, so come by for a visit and enjoy.

When we return from vacation, it will quickly be the month of May, which will be a
collection month for our ongoing support of the Bedford Foodbank. They are asking PWS
families to donate cans of Pasta with Meat (think Chef Boyardee). Thank you in advance for
your generosity.

We are so proud of the work our News 180 Team has done this year. This group of students has
worked hard to create newscasts that are shared throughout the year. Here is the latest
edition of News180. Enjoy: APRIL BROADCAST

Finally, a letter went out yesterday to third and fourth grade families regarding the
upcoming NH SAS assessments (formerly Smarter Balanced). If you did not receive this
email, we have included a link to the letter here: NH SAS Letter.

Have a great, restful, and relaxing vacation,

Cheryl Daley (Principal)
Dan Mitchell (Assistant Principal)

Author Aaron Becker Visit
PWS is pleased to welcome author/illustrator Aaron Becker on Monday, May 16 courtesy of
Gibson's Bookstore in Concord.  Mr. Becker will be sharing his new wordless book,
A Stone for Sasha with the 3rd and 4th grade students. We have long loved his other wordless
books: Journey, Quest, and Return and are excited to hear about the process of writing a
wordless book.

"A wordless book?" you might ask. "Isn't that for much younger children? What is the point of
a wordless book?"
Mr. Becker's sophistication and imagination are inspirational and a great reminder for any age,
that thought can be represented in more than just words.  It is the reader's task to "read" the
pages for detail and context, observing main characters, plot, setting, and dialog. Having read
these books many times, there is always something new to be found in the story of every page.
Readers of all ages will find the meaning of these stories within the context of their own lives.

Mr. Becker will be autographing books during his visit. If you would like to order any of his
books, please complete the ORDER FORM and return it to Mrs. Beltramo in the library NO
later than THURSDAY, May 3, 2018. Anyone may order an autographed book, you need not
be in the third or fourth grades.

For more information about author/illustrator, Aaron Becker, please see his website.

Parent Coffee with the Facilitators
Join Special Educator Facilitators, Matt Munsey, Dan Mitchell, Pam Ilg, and Beth Purcell for a

to McKelvie. Please come with your questions and for good conversation and company.

Knoxville, TN.  Just a reminder: clothing, fabrics, stuffed animals etc. can always be donated in

Book Donation Drive
Hello! We are Sydney Leyden and Aubrey Patrick, members of the For'Word Momentum
Club at Bedford High School. The club focuses on collecting books for underprivileged
children in the Manchester School District. We have done a book drive every year and would
like to continue the tradition, but we need your help! We would love it if we could partake in a
book drive at Peter Woodbury Elementary School during the months of April and May to
collect books for the drive. Reading is a fundamental skill to improve a child's language,
expand their vocabulary, and improve attention span and comprehension. We are hoping that
students and staff can donate some gently used children's books for the kindergarten students
of Beech Street Elementary School in Manchester so they can be privileged with their own
books.

Thank you,
Aubrey Patrick and Sydney Leyden
