PWS PrinciPal’s News

Dear PWS Families,

Open House was a great success this week! It was wonderful to see students showing their parents around our building and school yard.  This week’s Scholastic Book Fair saw over $1060 in books purchased by families and donated directly back to classrooms. A very special thank you to all the PTG volunteers who helped make the book fair a success and to Fatima Yousuf and Kerri Sullivan for organizing the event.

Remember that school pictures are this Tuesday, September 19th.

News from PWS
Hannaford Helps Program
Once again you have the opportunity to help our school by simply buying your groceries. The Hannaford Helps program will donate a portion of sales back to our school. All you have to do is shop at either of the Bedford Hannaford locations, drop your receipt in the collection tower and we will earn money on participating purchases. A flyer is being sent home with more information on how you can participate along with a list of eligible products.

Fourth Grade Chorus Information
It is time to sign up for the 4th grade chorus! This is a great opportunity for students to learn how to use their singing voices as part of a musical group and sing a variety of songs and styles. There will be several performances throughout the school year. Please return the completed permission slip to Mrs. Curran by 9/20 if your child is interested.

Destination Imagination - Parent Info Night 9/18
Destination Imagination is a fun academic program that teaches creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, critical thinking, and management skills through project-based challenges. These are key skills that all businesses (and colleges) are looking for – the ability to identify challenges and solve them, while leveraging the talents on your team.  Designed to complement K-12 education, we offer seven new academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts, service learning, and early learning. In solving a challenge, students learn the creative process from imagination to innovation and the skills needed to thrive in school, their careers and beyond.  Teams can be made up of 2-7 members and must have an adult Team Manager i.e. - a parent or two. We need volunteers and we will train you!  The 2017-18 Parent Info Night will be this coming Monday, September 18th in the Peter Woodbury School Library at 7pm.  For more info, check out Bedford DI on Facebook or contact our district coordinator, Marie Russell at www.bedfordrocksdi@gmail.com.

New Morning After school Program
Please be sure to let the New Morning After School Program know if your child will be absent from the program on a day they usually attend.  It is important that everyone involved is aware of any changes so that we may ensure that the children are where they need to be. Please ask New Morning staff if you have any questions about this.

Allergy Video
We recognize that there are some students in the school who have allergies, specifically food based allergies. In an attempt to address these allergies and educate the other students we will be showing the following video during lunches on Wednesday, September 20th. We encourage you to follow up with your child.

SPECIAL ALL SCHOOL PROJECT!
Peter Woodbury Elementary School is coming together to create a river!  A river of brightly colored unique rocks designed by each and every student here.

This project is inspired by the story Only One You written by Linda Kranz.  Mrs. Beltramo will read  the story to every class during library time the week of September 18th.  This story is about a little fish named Adri who is getting ready to head out in the ocean alone.  His parents, in an effort to help guide him, share all the important lessons that they have learned in life such as:
“You don’t have to follow the crowd”
“Find your own way”
“Always be on the lookout for a new friend”
We are asking that each student bring in a special rock that can fit in their fist.  These rocks will be painted at school to represent that we are unique and original.  Rocks that are smooth and flat (such as river rocks) will work best.  Grades 2, 3, and 4 will be painting their rocks in the library after hearing the story.  Kindergarten and first grade will be painting their rocks during another time block.  All students should bring in their rocks beginning Monday, September 18th.  Once all the rocks are painted, they will be formed into a colorful stone ‘“river” in the playground.
The important message for our students is that every one of us is unique and each of us have something to contribute!

Repeated News & Messages
Bus Plan
Riding the bus to and from school is a great opportunity for all of our students. We encourage parents to have a conversation with your child regarding the rules of the bus. Further, it is important to create a plan, as a family, for what your child should do if there is no adult waiting for them to get off the bus. Especially with our younger students, the bus drivers will not let them off the bus if no one is waiting. In these cases your child may be returned to the school. Having a backup plan in place will allow for a smooth and seamless bus ride for all. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
