PWS PrinciPal’s News

Dear PWS Families,

At last week’s Book Fair, we raised over $2700. This money goes directly back into the school, purchasing equipment and providing opportunities that directly impact our students. Thank you all for supporting this event. Today, Worm and Lunatic, two Harlem Wizards, were our guests during third grade lunch. They dazzled the students with their trickery and spoke of the importance of confidence. This coming week, the administration of all six schools and the PTG will be presenting their “Meet the Principals” Event.  All are welcome to join us at BCTV studios on Wednesday at 9:30. If you aren’t able to make it, please make sure to catch it when it airs on BCTV.

Have a great weekend and we hope you get a chance to enjoy Olde Towne Day,
Cheryl Daley (Principal)
Dan Mitchell (Assistant Principal)

From garden club
Check out the school garden to school kitchen connection that happened this week in the lunchroom! Students had the chance to try several recipes that included produce grown in our own PWS garden. On Tuesday, zucchini squash was included in the seasoned rice. On Wednesday, our kitchen staff made delicious kale chips, and on Friday, the pasta salad included plenty of school grown tomatoes. What a great way to introduce farm to table cooking and eating to our school! The students are able to participate in garden club during their recess on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Great things are growing at PWS, inside and out!!

Box Tops For Education Program
PWS participates in the Box Tops For EducationTM program - which means that we get money for our schools by sending in lots of little teeny-tiny rectangles.  Last year, we earned almost $3000, which went directly to the teachers to purchase items for their classrooms.
Over the next few weeks, classroom volunteers will be introducing the program to our new students and reminding returning students that they can help raise money for items in their classroom. We will collect and mail our Box Tops a few times a year, with the next collection set for Monday, October 16.
What you can do to help:
1.       Clip and Bring: Look for pink Box Tops on products, clip them, and send them to school in your student’s Go Binders.  (Be sure to also include any special Box Top Codes or Bonus Box Tops!)
2.       Ask your Neighbors/Family: Send a note out to your neighbors that don't have school-age kids; they may not be aware that they are throwing away money.
3.       Become a BTFE Member: If you become a member on www.BTFE.com, you can enter PWS into ongoing raffles for free Box Tops, and get exclusive great coupons to products.
For more information on the Box Tops for Education program, including a list of participating products and our school’s progress, visit www.BTFE.com.

Special Education Parent Focus Group
The district is looking to expand the parent volunteers in the Special Education Parent Focus Group, a formal partnership between special education parents and the school community. Parent participants represent each of the schools and encompass all grade levels. Meetings are held monthly on the third Wednesday from 9-10 AM at the SAU office. Discussion and activities support family engagement and improvements in the district special education initiatives. Please contact Chris Lassonde, Director of Special Services (lassondec@sau25.net). We would love to have more parents join us!

Destination Imagination - Registration Closes 9/29
Destination Imagination is a fun academic program that teaches creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, critical thinking, and management skills through project-based Challenges. These are key skills that all businesses (and colleges) are looking for – the ability to identify challenges and solve them, while leveraging the talents on your team. Designed to complement K-12 education, we offer seven new academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts, service learning, and early learning. In solving a challenge, students learn the creative process from imagination to innovation and the skills needed to thrive in school, their careers and beyond. Teams can be made up of 2-7 members and must have an adult Team Manager i.e. - a parent or two.  We need volunteers and we will train you! The 2017-18 registration is open thru Friday, September 29th.  For more info, check out www.nh-di.org; Bedford DI on Facebook, or contact our district coordinator, Marie Russell at www.bedfordrocksdi@gmail.com.
