PWS PrinciPal’s News
We are a community that inspires and develops, engaged, successful learners every chance, every day.
March 15, 2019

Dear PWS Families,
Thank you to everyone who came out for the town vote.  On that day the students got to vote for one of the following things to happen at school: extra recess, Mr. Mitchell dressing up in a costume, game hour, and book hour.  And the winner is….extra recess. So, on Friday, April 19th, students will have extra morning recess.
We are always looking for ways to better communicate with our families. For instance this week you received this blog by email as well as a link in a text. We want to hear from you about what the best ways are to communicate with you. While we know there may not be a perfect way, we are still interested in knowing what the preferences are of our families. Please feel free to reach out and email us if you have any thoughts or opinions on the matter.
Mrs. Marshall's 3rd grade class at Peter Woodbury Elementary School and Quinn Hutchins, a senior from Bedford High School have forged a special relationship as a result of Read Across America week. Mr. Parker, BHS Athletic Director, brought some of the boys and girls hockey players over to PWS on March 6 so they could read to every class in grades K-3. Each hockey player went into a classroom to read a book and spend time with the students. Quinn made such an impression on the third graders that they wrote him notes thanking him for coming in and drawing him pictures to wish him luck at his championship game. To say Quinn was touched by what he got from them is an understatement. After their win, Quinn took the time to create a small surprise, unique to each student in Mrs. Marshall's class. Quinn hand wrote a note to every student, being sure to reference something from their letter (for example, "I really liked your hockey stick drawing", "the BHS hockey socks and paws all over the card were amazing"). He included a small picture on the back of his note and then tied it to two lollipops. You can imagine the third graders' delight when he returned to Peter Woodbury, this morning, to hand out his gifts and thank them in person. This is something all of us will hold in our hearts for a long time to come.

Have a Great Weekend,

A special thanks to all of the volunteers who have worked with these kids since last fall, especially their Team Managers.

Kids Heart Challenge
Students have started the Kids Heart Challenge program during their PE class. This was formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart. During this challenge students learn:
  • the importance of developing heart-healthy habits
  • being physically active can be fun and
  • when you raise funds to support research and education you help save lives across the country and in the community. Fundraising is optional but everyone will be having fun and be active jumping rope during their regularly-scheduled PE class.
In order to fundraise for this cause you will head to http://american.heart.org/kidsheartchallenge/ and set up a fundraising page for your child. The first step in setting up your child's page is to enter the name of the school. Please enter our school name as Peter Woodbury Elementary School. Any other search will not yield our school as an option.
Students are already jumping and having fun being heart healthy in PE class. Any fundraising needs to be completed by March 29th.

Girl Scout Marker Collection
Girl Scout Brownie Troop 51750 is collecting dried out markers for recycling as part of their World of Girls Journey. They have placed a collection box in the lobby of PWS and hope to have it filled with dried out and used markers. At the end of April the troop will be sorting and sending the markers to Crayola for recycling. Crayola is accepting various types of markers including: dry erase, highlighters, and off brand markers. They have come up with a process to remove the insides and recycle the plastic tubes. More information on this process can be found at: https://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx
Thank you for your support in helping our troop promote recycling!

BEEP  is a regular early childhood program  providing the opportunity for typically developing three and four year old children and children identified as having special needs to learn and play together.  We believe active participation and concrete learning experiences make learning more meaningful for the children and best serve their development and learning. All the children are provided a multi-sensory learning environment in which they utilize all senses in learning new concepts.  Language development and social skills are emphasized throughout the integrated curriculum. Implementation of specialized intervention within natural situations occurs without disrupting the curriculum and educational routines of the classroom.
Staff:
Classrooms are staffed by certified educators with a background in early childhood and special education.  In addition, our staff includes a licensed speech and language pathologist, a speech assistant, licensed occupational therapist, occupational therapy assistant, licensed physical therapist, classroom assistants and a program coordinator.  Educational consultants are available as needed. Throughout a BEEP day, each classroom has a teacher and assistant at all times, and other therapists and paraprofessionals may join the classroom periodically.
Programs:
·Classroom programs for 3 and 4 year olds are provided two, three, four, or five days a week for 2 ½ hours a day.
