March 8, 2019

Dear PWS Families,

The first week back after vacation always gives us some fun stories to share. A first grader was looking at Mrs. Daley’s ID badge today and asking about it.  After answering the questions, the students said, “You look a lot younger in that picture!” Earlier this week, some Kindergarten students were walking down the hall.  We noticed that they were sniffing the floor, of course we had to inquire about what they were doing. Their response... “The floor smells like bubblegum.”
Mrs. Piantedosi is already busy hanging art work in the halls in preparation for our Art Show in April.  If you happen to be in the building please stop to appreciate the talent of the students.
Our Cross Stitch Club has grown to 60 second graders. We were in there yesterday and the students were excited, engaged and working hard on their visual motor skills.
The Bedford High School girls and boys hockey teams visited on Wednesday to read to the students in Kindergarten through grade 3.  The BHS students were polite, respectful and enjoyed their time with the younger students. It was a wonderful experience for everyone and we hope to have other BHS sports teams/clubs visit in the future.
March is a month where we support the Bedford Food Pantry's Weekend Backpack program. This month we are asking for donations of single serve pasta (i.e. Ramen Noodles or EasyMac cups). Please consider donating in the large bin in the lobby. Thank you for your continued generosity to this worthwhile cause.

Good Luck to our 8 Destination Imagination teams from Peter Woodbury School who are presenting at the Regional Tournament at Souhegan High School, Amherst on Saturday, March 9th.

Internet Safety Reminders
Mrs. Cassamassino, our Tech Integrator recently posted on her website some helpful information for parents regarding recent news stories, It is called Internet Urban Legends
Here are some things we've learned that we’d like to give to you for background information:
  • If parents are monitoring their child's internet use (knowing when they are on it and what they are doing) and keep an open line of communication with their child then they should not have anything to worry about.
  •  Whatsapp is a texting app that hackers are using to send links to the Momo challenge videos and gain access to a person's phone and personal information. Children under the age of 16 are legally not allowed to use it.
  • Apps like YouTube Kids and Tik Tok (formally musical.ly) are apps that some people claim (We have not seen this personally) have exposed their children to video clips encouraging and showing the child how to harm themselves or others.  From what we've read these are small clips embedded in videos that look perfectly fine for children to watch (like Peppa Pig or Minecraft). The clips typically occur after about 5 minutes into the video.
Here are things we talk about with the kids every year and reinforce all year long:
  • If you don't know who it is or what it is don't talk to them and don't click it.
  • The internet is not a real place which means we can't believe everything on the internet is true.
  • The things like Momo are fake and are myths designed to scare people.

Girl Scout Marker Collection
Girl Scout Brownie Troop 51750 is collecting dried out markers for recycling as part of their World of Girls Journey. They have placed a collection box in the lobby of PWS and hope to have it filled with dried out and used markers. At the end of April the troop will be sorting and sending the markers to Crayola for recycling. Crayola is accepting various types of markers including: dry erase, highlighters, and off brand markers. They have come up with a process to remove the insides and recycle the plastic tubes. More information on this process can be found at: https://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx
Thank you for your support in helping our troop promote recycling!

Bedford Early Education Program
BEEP is accepting registrations for the 2019-2020 School Year.  We have space available in many of our 3 and 4 year old classrooms.  Please contact Meghan Fredette , BEEP Program Coordinator at (603) 627-1776 x-23216 or fredettem@bedfordnhk12.net
BEEP  is a regular early childhood program  providing the opportunity for typically developing three and four year old children and children identified as having special needs to learn and play together.  We believe active participation and concrete learning experiences make learning more meaningful for the children and best serve their development and learning. All the children are provided a multi-sensory learning environment in which they utilize all senses in learning new concepts.  Language development and social skills are emphasized throughout the integrated curriculum. Implementation of specialized intervention within natural situations occurs without disrupting the curriculum and educational routines of the classroom.
Staff:
Classrooms are staffed by certified educators with a background in early childhood and special education.  In addition, our staff includes a licensed speech and language pathologist, a speech assistant, licensed occupational therapist, occupational therapy assistant, licensed physical therapist, classroom assistants and a program coordinator.  Educational consultants are available as needed. Throughout a BEEP day, each classroom has a teacher and assistant at all times, and other therapists and paraprofessionals may join the classroom periodically.
Programs:
·Classroom programs for 3 and 4 year olds are provided two, three, four, or five days a week for 2 ½ hours a day.
·The Intensive Needs program offers the opportunity for an individualized self-contained, or partially self-contained program..
·For more specifics, contact the BEEP Program Coordinator.
